Advancing Anthropological Research with 3D Scanning

As a biological anthropologist, Claire Terhune’s lab in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Arkansas is dedicated to understanding how modern humans evolved from other primates, and how early humans migrated out of Africa and dispersed into Asia and Europe. Discover how she uses 3D scanning technologies to advance anthropological research by discovering more about our shared evolutionary path.

New 3D Printer Release

The Axiom 20 is the latest edition to the Airwolf 3D printer line. It’s the toughest, tallest, and most precise 3D printer in its class. The AXIOM 20 has 3x the build volume and 4x the build speed of the original AXIOM 3D printer.

One of the biggest challenges with designing a high-performance 3D printer of this size was getting the Z-axis to work correctly over 20 inches of travel with 20-30 lb. sitting on it. The Z-axis now has a precision ball screw to provide 3D prints with high accuracy, repeatable results, zero backlash, and extreme precision.

Getting Started on Reverse Engineering from Scan to CAD

Building anything from scratch can be difficult, especially when you don’t know how to approach it or where to start.

Reverse engineering makes the design process much easier by using existing knowledge and building off of it. It eliminates the need to design from a blank slate. The process takes an existing part, captures its surface measurements, and uses this information as a reference to create the new design.

In part 1 of our reverse engineering series, we cover the basics of reverse engineering from scan data to CAD.

New Product Introduction

Quick Way to Reverse Engineer CAD Models in SOLIDWORKS

KARBON optical CMM delivers accurate measurements using a contact probe for reverse engineering and quality control applications. It comes with a wireless stylus, giving you total freedom of movement for capturing 3D measurements.

Take advantage of parametric modeling from a physical part directly into your CAD environment the moment you capture the data. Using the KARBON optical CMM, the surface measurements can be translated directly into SOLIDWORKS. It makes the reverse engineering a more efficient process.
